One of our rarest, most secretive carnivores lives almost entirely hidden in the mid-elevation forests of the Sierra Nevada. They are integral to the living community of creatures that depend on all aspects of our intact forests - including large living trees, standing dead trees (“snags,” or foundational trees), mossy, fallen trees, and even burned trees. Covering a lot of ground, fishers use streams and thick vegetation as corridors to travel unnoticed, with territories as large as 17 square miles. The presence of fishers and their young deepen a sense of mystery and beauty in our natural forests.
